Fire ravages marina

A fire rips through the maintenance building at the Rideau Marina on the east side of the Catraqui River on Saturday. The fire broke out around 3 p.m. with the entire building collapsing around 4 p.m.

A massive fire in the east end Saturday afternoon caused at least $300,000 in damage to Rideau Marina.

A maintenance shop at the boatyard on the east side of the Cataraqui River at Point St. Mark caught fire around 3:20 p.m.

The first fire truck was on the scene just minutes after the 911 call came in, and was quickly joined by nearly every truck in the city -- 15 trucks and the city's new fireboat responded to the blaze and South Frontenac volunteers were acting as standby at city stations while Kingston crews fought the blaze.

Fire crews initially tried to cut their way into the building but were pulled back when the fire was judged out of control.

The building, built shortly after the Second World War, was full of paint, Fiberglas and solvents and it had a double roof, through which the fire burn as firefighters tried to extinguish the flames at ground level.

Chain saws and cutting tools were left in a neat pile a safe distance away from the structure by retreating firefighters. The roof of the building collapsed in a gout of flame and black smoke about 10 minutes after they pulled back.

"It was a really stubborn and deep-seated fire to try and fight," said Kingston Fire and Rescue assistant deputy chief Steve Hurst.

Adding to the difficulty was the fact that the shop where the fire started was on a pier that jutted out into the river, offering firefighters just one narrow approach to the building.

The department called out its new marine unit for the first time and the boat poured water onto the building while pumpers on land doused it from the east.

The smoke from the burning building was so thick that it was almost impossible to see the ground as a person walked through it.

Firefighters prevented the fire from moving into adjoining areas of the marina, although the maintenance shop and a number of vehicles parked near it were a total loss from the fire.

It was already a hot day and Hurst said that added to the difficulty of fighting it. Besides the acrid brown smoke from the chemicals inside, Hurst said the hot summer day made it dangerous for firefighters in bunker suits.

"It didn't take long for us to cycle through every person we had on scene," he said.

Fire crews were still on scene at 2:30 a.m. to ensure that there were no hot spots that could flare. A backhoe was brought in to help move smoking debris.

One boat was destroyed in the blaze.

Adding to the difficulty was the thunderstorm that rolled through at 5:30 p.m. with high winds and hail. "We didn't need that," said Hurst. Fire investigators were still sifting through the ashes of the structure Sunday trying to determine a cause.

A resident of the neighbourhood said he saw a racoon crawl from underneath the steel roof just after the fire started and speculated that the animal may have chewed through electrical wiring in the building.

After dropping some five metres from the roof, the animal lay stunned on the pier for 20 minutes, a short distance from where crews were trying to extinguish the fire, before shuffling away shortly before the building collapsed. ielliot@thewhig.com

It's a good thing there wasn't another gridlock on the highway and causeway when all this was happening. It could have taken all the other firetrucks a while to get to the scene. Another reason for the city to get to work on that third crossing.

"The first fire truck was on the scene just minutes after the 911 call came in..." I would hope so since the fire station is only two blocks away. Question is how long did it take the other trucks and the fire boat to get there?

Another question? A news report I heard said KFR used every available truck, the above says they also used South Frontenac volunteers to man city stations. Are we to assume every city (volunteer too - truck and person) was used for this blaze, I hope not. I will bet dollars to Timmies that Harold's volunteers were not allowed to do what they are trained and hired to do. To fill in the city stations - the rest of the city on this side of the river, when the inadequately staffed "full timers" (seven shifts a month) have to work. No beef with the workers - just the "managers"

Obviously a tricky fire to deal with - given the location. Appears the fire boat saved the day. One may ask what information was provided to persons in the vicinity about what was actually burning?!

@ Dr Who? What side of the river do you live on? If you live on the east side, South Frontenac FF may have been at the city volley stations. But if you think they would put South Frontenac FF in the city core stations, you must have been sucking back a couple of wild parsnip smoothies...pass the bacon

I was heading to work this morning and I saw a raccoon coming out of a Scotiabank. He had a sack full of money and what looked to me like a couple of bags full of day old donuts. By the description of the raccoon given by the media, it looks like the same raccoon that burned down the marina. My guess that he is on the lam now after he burned down the marina. Yogi Bear and the park ranger are after him,.......I just hope that this is not a case of mistaken identity, and the raccoon is unjustly targeted. I have another source that identified the arsonist as the Hamburgler.....It makes sense, he's been laying low for years ever since Grimace pounded the tar out of him at Mayor McCheese's convocation.......pass the tubesteaks....

As I suspected, I'm informed it took the other trucks well over an hour to get on the scene. This is the type of poor response timings that KFD is known for.

HEY MATADOOR, I did run a couple of scenarios through the flying pig computer, and pig's chewing wires was a definite possibility. The problem is us pigs aren't much for climbing, you know slippery hooves...that hasn't ruled out some cross breeding pig/raccon lovechild, probably with raccoon colouring, because we have such fair colouring you know.... pass the peameal

Harry, stay on topic....who do you think started the fire, a Raccoon, the Hamburglar (rubble rubble) or the possiblity of a pig/raccoon superhybrid?
Your insight wood be appreciated...

Harry - give credit where credit is due - to the firefighters. How would you like to be out in hot humid weather with bunker suits and heat of fire. My husband and son were both volunteer firefighters and you go to fires no matter what the weather - freezing roads, ice storms and heat and humidity. Congratulations to the firefighters - you are to be commended

Well I don't know about "good work", maybe "ok work". The marina is toast, after all. The raccoon was obviously just living in the structure. They don't chew wiring as a rule because they are not rodents or lagomorphs, and have no need to chew in order to prevent their teeth from growing too large. Raccoons do occasionally cause fires by touching and short-circuiting electrical wiring. But hrrrrrrrrrph likes to chew wires; has anyone seen him lately?

harry, I think you are misinformed, an hour to get the trucks to the scene... unheard of, kfd has one of the best departments around, hence they are still iao certified. have you ever done anything positive with your life? i thought not, but i'm sure the interviewers for kingston fire and rescue were much kinder when they denied you a position at one of their halls.

@ Harry ...It says in the whig that a raccoon started the fire. Page 2 actually has this statement "RACCON MAY BE TO BLAME" How is this trivial? Lets get to the bottom of this mystery. I doubt it was a raccoon, and painting the poor raccoon as an arsonist is indeed a terrible injustice. I'm sticking with the Hamburlgar.
This is a story about a fire. No need for any views on it at all.
Pass the ribsauce please...

I'm here factless. some body has to correct the bull sh!t you spew. Here's a quote from Wildlife Animal Control who are professionals as opposed to BSers like factless.
"Chewing on wires and tearing insulation off pipes is not uncommon."
This quote comes from an article on how to deal with racoons.
Once again the factless factif is shown to know nothing.

Boy o boy, when you lot get out of your mother's basements and see the real world you can get an education and learn to read correctly. The building that burned would burn no matter how close the nearest fire truck was - the emphasis was and should be on the exposed other buildings. I am sure every firefighter , career or volunteer deserves all the praise they are getting. I don't have beef with that. Take a look how the excellent system Kingston and Pittsburgh Township Fire Departments had ten years ago and how the residents and members of those department have been bullied into a lesser service, more expensive model by Chief Harry and his union boys. Like most other things well done at an appropriate budget level before amalgamation the Fire Department is now demoralised and over managed by overpaid people who have the benefit of being "the authority " on firefighting and therefore are never questioned (except by councilor Joyce once in awhile) . One day when the 200 or so volunteers are not utiliised correctly and the entire career FD is away at a fire, another building will burn in Kingston, then watch the excrement hit the ventilator.

factif, have you ever tried to put out a fire composed of epoxy resin, wood varnish, bottom paint, acetone, paint thinner, and any of the other myriad of solvents that would be present in a boat repair shop? They are lucky that there wasn't anything in there that exploded.
